Once again the Holland (MI) Sentinel has used one of my articles in their newspaper. This one is the best Sprint Cup drivers from northern states, though they’ve once again cut down my list by one.
At this point I’m wondering what to do about my articles making the paper. I know it’s a decent bit of exposure for my resume, which I very much appreciate, but these things are printed without my knowledge or consent (not that there would be an issue with consent), and I’m not sure what my rights to the article are, because I’m having trouble finding them on the B/R website.
Should I call the newspaper itself and request notification (or a copy of the paper) anytime my work is published? Should I talk to B/R? One of the things that I’ve noticed about B/R over the years is that it’s very difficult to track who is seeing your article and where they’re coming from, whether or not it’s been syndicated, and so on. I’d like to be better able to track my own exposure, because it serves as my strongest bargaining chip if I look for a paying job someday. (Or is that why it’s so hard to track? Hmmm…)
